That's her. Sharon Van Etten from last night at Rest Fest. What they did on stage paralyzed me. I'm not sure how I made it home.
This year's Rest Fest has been as special and magical as I had hoped. There's lots of love: for the music I heard from bands I barely knew (Hop Along, Careers, Goldtooth, Barons in the Attic), the organizers and volunteers, the lights on the ceiling that the performers gazed up at during their sets, the smiles and calm in the audience. I didn't want it to end.
8:00pm
Sean Rowe: Downwind (I wouldn't trade my time with Sharon Van Etten last night for anything. Still, part of my heart wanted to be in two places at once so I could hear Sean Rowe sing this song at Valentine's. I like thinking about their voices meeting in the sky.)
Alex Winston: Choice Notes
Grizzly Bear: Yet Again
Hospitality: Friends Of Friends
Joanna Newsom: Peach, Plum, Pear
Shannon And The Clams: Baby Don't Do It
Twin Shadow: Five Seconds (I listen to this live acoustic version so that I can experience hanging on someone's every word.)
Gold Motel: Slow Emergency
Josh Ritter: Right Moves
Feist: Past In Present
Grimes: Genesis (She played this song live at a record store and it's mesmerizing. I like that it looks like a book store! And I am always counting the days until I see her play at the Basilica in Hudson on 9/25.)
Department Of Eagles: Balmy Night
TEEN: Electric
Thao & The Get Down, Stay Down: Beat (Health, Life And Fire)
M. Ward: To Go Home
Poor Moon: Heavens Door (New project from some members of Fleet Foxes.)
9:00
The Jayhawks: Take Me With You (When You Go)
The Last Town Chorus: You
Best Coast: Rhiannon
A.A. Bondy: I Can See The Pines Are Dancing
Jessica Lea Mayfield: Kiss Me Again
Bonnie "Prince" Billy: You Remind Me of Something (The Glory Goes) (Killer dreamy lyrics. I especially like this part: "I like the places where the night
that has no end")
does not mean an end
where smiles break free
and surpirse is your friend
and dancing goes on in the kitchen
until dawn
to my favorite song
that has no end")
Katie Dill: The Body's Only Rental
Bahamas Lost: In The Light (If this video of him from Conan was 15 minutes long I'd still watch it over and over again. Because of the back up singers. And his voice. And all of it.)
Sharon Van Etten: I'm Wrong
José González: Time To Send Someone Away
Sebadoh: Together Or Alone
The Innocence Mission: Brotherhood Of Man
Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan: No Place To Fall
Neko Case: Middle Cyclone
JBM: Going Back Home
Picture note: I'm not exaggerating when I say that Sharon's performance was transcendent. This review explains it much better than I can.
