film festival

i can barely wrap my finger
around the coolness of the next
three weeks:

each wednesday & thursday
for the next
three weeks iear and
the sanctuary for independent
media will host the american museum
of natural history's
margaret mead traveling
film and video festival.

these movies seem like
a dose of reality outside of the
columns of the newspaper and
a means of traveling to places
i don't know about.

this wednesday's film is
"al otro lado (the other side)."
there's a preview on the website.
the site says that the movie "looks at
immigration and drug trafficking through
mexico's 200-year-old tradition of
corrido music."

thursday, january 26 is
awake zion. the film looks at the links
between reggae music and culture to judaism.
watching the preview i saw some
nice footage of early reggae dance
moves and religious jewish steps.
i've never been to this "sanctuary"
and i've always doubted any sort of
connection between judaism and reggae
but after watching the preview i've
already forgone my doubts. the
movie is one hour long.

the programs begin at 7:00pm.
admission is by donation.
the sanctuary is at
3361 sixth ave in troy
(at 101st street where sixth ave.
turns into fifth)

a bit of an introduction:
the margaret mead traveling film and video
festival is the longest-running showcase for
international documentaries, encompassing
a broad spectrum of work, from indigenous
community media to experimental nonfiction.

fear not the documentary! i wonder
if i'll attend all of the movies. feels like
a sweet, challenging goal for the middle
of winter.

brent and band recently played a show
missy bly. it was the first time i saw them.
and they rock socks.
sadly, i do not know about the other
bands and i cannot find any information
on them. they will probably be friendly
though.
